clock tower maintenance in Easton MA

Hi all, Here’s the latest restoration from my shop. This clock lives at Stonehill College in Easton MA. It was built for the Ames family in 1870. The Ames family made a fortune manufacturing and selling shovels during the making of the trans continental railroad in the early to mid 19th century. This clock adorns the cupola atop the carriage house and stables that were  once vital to the Ames estate into the 20th century. The clock is a quarter striking and hour striking  movement which rings both on the same bell. (confusing around 12-3 ‘O clock!!) There are 4 dials (faces)  made of mosaic tile. The cupola is topped off with a magnificent weathervane. The clock was made by the Boston firm of E. Howard and company, who made some of the finest clock in existence!(in my opinion!!)  We disassembled the clock in late February and final assembly was completed on December 15th. I may follow up this email with another  with more pictures (if I can figure out how to do that with all these email addresses)

  1. Here is a photo of one of the several clocks I have. The one I have was made by the inventor of these “atmos” clocks.

It should be ready for pickup in the next few days. I understand it is worth some serious cash…I hope the guy doesn’t try to steal it from me..

It never needs winding: that tin-can brass thing in the back is filled with an inert gas and sealed. As barometric pressure changes it squeezes or lets the can expand/contract. that slight motion winds the spring!
