“Live Free or Die” is
the official motto of New Hampshire. It signifies the state’s strong emphasis on individual liberty and independence, and the willingness to fight for those freedoms. The motto is attributed to General John Stark, a New Hampshire war hero, who wrote it in a letter as a toast to veterans.
The motto comes from a letter written by General John Stark in 1809. He was unable to attend a reunion for veterans of the Battle of Bennington due to illness and sent his toast, which included the phrase “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils,” .
